Read this article before you buy pepper spray
If you think pepper spray is the ultimate self defense tool, the greatest martial arts weapon -- think again!
There was a study conducted in the late 70s. Police volunteered to play the part of bad guys. The hid in a junkyard.
The 'victims' were given cans of mace to spray in their attacker's eyes. They were allowed to keep the spray in their hands, ready to fire.
Yet they still weren't able to stop the aggressor. Even with the spray held at the fingertips.
What chance does someone have, if the pepper spray is in their pocket, purse, or attached to a key chain in a holder?
We have come a long way from the crude mace.
A strong shot of pepper spray in the eyes would probably stop me ...
And therein lies another problem....
Once, my students sprayed a little capsicum spray (pepper spray) in the carport where we were training. We immediately left the area.
After a couple of minutes, we came back into the carport -- and we still couldn't work out. The lingering spray was just too strong for our eyes.
Can you imagine spraying the pepper spray and then leaning forward a few inches in the scuffle?
What's even worse -- what if there is a slight wind blowing toward you?
You could get a faceful from a breeze blowing your way.
Pepper spray definitely has its uses. On the other hand, it's just like any weapon, you have to know how to use it. And you have to know how to defend against your own weapon.
Be careful ... and stay safe.
