Park Violence

There Was a Fight in "My" Park -- Broken Hands

The night before last, the news reported two incidents of violence in my beloved city.

Can you believe it? And I thought it was quiet in this neck of the woods.

Anyway, across town, we have a beautiful park that borders on the Willamette River. About 30 years ago, my father was in on the planning of Alton Baker Park. It has bike trails which go on for miles.

Personally, I like feeding the ducks with my wife and daughter in the pond. We also like attending concerts at the Cuthbert Outdoor Amphitheater. The most recent groups that we have seen there were Santana and Mana'; Peter, Paul, and Mary; and Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

Oops -- I digressed ....

Well, a few nights ago, a BIG fight broke out in the park.

The police reported shots fired. They said it was one big group of adolescents against another.

The report said that heads were hit and ... hands were smashed.

From the way the report sounded, I am guessing that these young pups hurt their hands punching each other in the head.

Conclusion

Everyone who reads [Martial Arts Mastery] knows how to pack their fingers into a fist for a punch, right?

If not, I'll give some tips ... or you can read The Punch Papers. I think there is an article in there on the subject.

By The Way -- In the mid 1980s, I had a girlfriend who wanted me to take her for walks in Alton Baker, at night. She felt that since I had a black belt, she would be safe.

Did we go?

If so, why do you think I went ahead and walked at night?

If not, what reasoning would I have, not to go?

On The Other Side of Town ... Shots Were Fired!

And on the other side of town, on the same night, some guy overstayed his welcome at a bar.

The bar was closing for the evening, but this "dude" refused to leave. A couple of bouncers escorted him to the door.

As he got outside he drew a gun and fired it, at nobody in particular. It grazed the head of a pedestrian passing by (at 2:00 am in the morning?)

Well, it's pretty obvious that the bouncers haven't read 'Wrist Locks: From Protecting Yourself to Becoming an Expert.'

My advice to you ...

If you are bouncing for a bar, tavern, or night club, you have to be alert ALWAYS! Don't escort someone to the door without some sort of control on the hands.

I am not sure I would allow someone to reach into a coat pocket, if I were doing the escorting to the door. If, for some reason, I couldn't hold the arms -- policy of the club, local laws, etc., then I would have my eyes on those hands. (Let the other bouncer watch the crowd. Actually, he was probably the last guy in the place.)

And that's my one quick thought on that subject ... on to the next article.
