Surprise -- Grappled From Behind (Two Lines of Attack)

Are you really unaware of someone sneaking up from behind? If you have any sort of advanced notice, then you can elbow, back kick, turn and fight, etc.

But what if you really were surprised?

What if the first clue you were being attacked was the power shove into your shoulders from behind?

What if, you felt your legs being tackled, and you realized what was happening as you toppled to the ground?

After reading the articles on center-line theory, the first question you should ask about an upper body shove is ... you guessed it .... is it a centerline shove?

If you feel one shoulder being shoved, then you can learn to pivot to the side and let it pass. It takes practice, but the feeling can be learned.

Centerline Shove or Push

But what if the push is dead on center?

And what if your first clue is a tackle by the legs?

How would you respond?

Originally, I gave subscribers to Martial Arts Mastery a week to think about possible responses. Then, I offered a couple of suggestions for each kind of attack.

Take some time to brainstorm some possibilities.

(Careful. For some reason, a giant shove from behind causes people to bite their tongue, a little whiplash, and more. Establish parameters for safety.)
