Should You Sell or Pre-Sell:
What Kind of Message to Write?
In the Internet marketing world, it is commonly believed that an
affiliate can ruin a sale by trying to sell the prospect.
The affiliate in his or her enthusiasm may mention the price too
early, for example. Or talk about all of the bonuses. Then, when the
prospect gets to that part of the sales letter on the sales site, the
information is old hat. It doesn't have the sizzle needed to nudge the
prospect into customer status.
These marketing pros have strong sales messages that have been
tested on thousands of viewers. They want to do the selling.
So, they advise that the affiliate give a simple endorsement of how
they benfitted from hte product. And then they send their readers over
to the site, where the real sales message begins.
This is called Pre-Selling. You just warm the prospect up, and let
the site do the selling.

Doing Your Own Marketing
On the other hand, you could be so enthusiastic about the product
that you want to mount your own campaign. you understand that you
have to get in your prospects' faces around seven or eight times, in
order for them to buy.
You are prepared to start with a strong endorsement letter. You'll
follow with an initial report of how sales went and some early
testimonials. Then you'll give them a how-to article that points
towards the product. And so on.
You want to market aggressively. You're out for money.

Which Method Should You Try?
Why not try both! Seriously. Secrets of Teaching Martial Arts More
Effectively is so new, that we don't have an accurate conversion
ratio (although we are getting a fairly high conversion to sales
from our weekly e-zine).
I will be experimenting over the next few months. I'll try new
headlines, new copy, etc.... You'll get a full report, once the numbers
are somewhat consistent.
Until then ... experiment. If you have a way to track response, why
don't you try both. One week try a pre-sell message only. Let the
site do the selling. Direct them to the main page, and then tell them
to click on the link that will giv ethem more information.
Then next week, try a real sales message to a different audience -- either
a sales letter that you have written, or one that I have.
Compare results. Of course, the best test would be to have a random
split of a single list into two parts. This would be fair. With two
completely different lists, you might be comparing apples with oranges.
Be careful.
On the other hand, if you keep alternating, eventually you should get
a pretty accurate feeling for which method gives you the best results.
And if you need help with either a Pre-Sell or a Sales Message, just
e-mail me. I'll do what I can, OK?
