Limited Mobility Martial Training: Fighting in a Heavy Coat
     by Keith Pascal

Parkas, Coats, and Jackets -- Oh My!

OK, it's cold out.

Are you wearing something for warmth?

A coat? Maybe lined with a nice, thick insulating layer?

Do you have a nice sweater on under the coat?

Have you considered how your mobility will be limited while wearing winter clothing?

Try punching with a parka on, sometime. Parka punching limits the extension of your arm.

If you are looking for scenario practice, there is nothing easier than throwing on your jackets and going outside for a little martial-arts practice.

Try it sometime. Whether sparring or practicing chi sao (sticky hands), going against someone else while you both wear thick jackets changes the game entirely.

After you practice this way for awhile, try practicing against someone who has more mobility. You wear a heavy jacket, but you fight someone with a light sweater.

Now, what are you going to do? How will your tactics change?
